William E. Code, President:

Dr. Bill Code grew up in Saskatchewan on a mixed farm. He studied medicine and worked as a General Practitioner in rural Saskatchewan prior to undertaking specialty training in Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at the University of Calgary. He then spent four years on faculty at the University of Saskatchewan where he was heavily involved in selecting and teaching Anaesthesia residents and in doing clinical and laboratory research. Currently, Dr. Code is a clinical anesthesiologist in Duncan, on Vancouver Island, and a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Code's special interest in pain management and his intrigue with the potential of emu oil led him to begin farming emus three years ago. Dr. Code is also part of the American Emu Association Oil Standards Team.

Jim Shirley, Director, General Manager:

Jim Shirley has a wealth of education and practical experience in both business and farming. Following his education (B.Sc., Geology, Brandon University and B.Sc., Honors, Carleton University), Jim worked and traveled in Australia for nearly five years. While there, he observed wild emus in the outback.

Upon returning to Canada, Jim managed a service station for one year before turning to farming. He operated a family dairy farm in southeastern Saskatchewan until 1992, but because of chronic knee pain, a career change was needed.

Seeing the promise of emu oil, in 1994, Jim purchased his first emus as a way to diversify the farm. By 1996, Jim actively began marketing emu oil and other emu products directly to consumers. Jim has been instrumental in the progress of the emu industry in Canada. Currently, Jim is the General Manager of Canadian Emu Oil Sask. Ltd. and coordinates the processing of emu fat into a high quality naturally deodorized emu oil. In addition to his activity as an emu producer, direct marketer, and General Manager of Canadian Emu Oil Sask. Ltd, Jim is co-owner of a health food store. Jim's knowledge, experience and dedication enable him to contribute to the progress of Canadian Emu Oil Sask. Ltd.

Denise Code, Director:

Denise's training and work experience are in the area of nutrition. In 1975, she obtained a B.Sc. with Great Distinction in Home Economics, Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Saskatchewan. She went on to complete a Master of Science in Nutrition and received practical training in Dietetics while in Saskatoon. Over the years, Denise has worked as a Clinical Dietitian in hospitals and long-term care facilities as a Community Nutritionist promoting nutrition in health and disease prevention, and as a nutrition professor at the University of Saskatchewan. Denise is currently a Community Dietitian, and provides nutrition support and education to chronically ill, home-bound individuals.

In 1993, she welcomed the addition of emus to the small acreage she farms with her husband, Dr. William Code. The emu's potential as a healthy food choice was the primary factor in her decision. In addition, she was intrigued with the ability to farm this livestock in a natural, healthy manner, beneficial to humans and the environment. She is impressed with the ability of emu oil to help various health conditions and looks forward to its availability as a cooking oil or ingestible spread for consumers. Currently she is active in emu farming and day-to-day marketing operations at Canadian Emu Oil Saskatchewan Ltd.
